As computing expands its domain from workplace to pervasive and domestic environments, interest in the aesthetic experience and new design approaches such as ambiguity is increasing in HCI. In the field of HCI, art is often used as a design resource. However, there have been only a few empirical studies about art’s role in computing systems beyond decoration and effective communication.

In order to uncover the potential uses of art in information systems we decided to explore how people think about art when it is combined in an information system. To put exploration in action, we created a prototype of an information display that displays random art objects. With this prototype, which we called Pangmangi, we conducted seven group interviews. While the prototype is shown to the participants, the participants were asked to freely discuss among themselves what they think the system does. We gradually unfolded Pangmangi's intended use and purpose, deliberatively forcing the participants into sense-making. The working paper details these findings.
